aluminum drive shaft
Do all the Firehawks come with the aluminum drive shaft, or is that an SLP option. I was surprised to see my 95 having one, never seen one before..
Re: aluminum drive shaft
This was NOT a Firehawk item in the early 4th gen cars. GM had a service bulletin and owners could get the driveshaft replaced under warranty. I did!

I did as well. Wasn't the shaft they used the 1LE piece?Maplehawk wrote:This was NOT a Firehawk item in the early 4th gen cars. GM had a service bulletin and owners could get the driveshaft replaced under warranty. I did!

Re: aluminum drive shaft
I have seen aluminum drives hafts in F-bods since 85 or so.
The 3rdgens have a small diameter but thicker wall tube and the 4th gens have a larger tube but thinner wall tubing along with a harmonic balancer on the yoke.

Always looking for SLP/Firehawk parts for 3rdgen birds.

Re: aluminum drive shaft
My 10th Anniversary Firehawk has an aluminum driveshaft made by the Amarican Axle Manufacturing Co. Same as the Aluminum differential Cooling Cover.
Re: aluminum drive shaft
The LT1's had iron shafts UNLES you could convince GM to replace it with an aluminum one. The one they would replace it with most of the time was the smaller 3rd gen aluminum drive shaft. The LS1 cars got a more substantial aluminum shaft starting in 98. A previous owner probably swapped it over with the more common LS1 shaft. I know I did on '95 #237 around 2002ish.

Re: aluminum drive shaft
Our Hawk has an aluminum drive shaft too, it has a sticker on it from the River Bend manufacturing plant, (if memory serves me correctly), what is the difference, I mean I understand steel is stronger and aluminum is lighter, but other than that. I polished ours while it was out of the car for the motor rebuild and it came out awesome!

I would have posted pics but for some reason I can't, I contacted admin some time back but was call out of town for work and answers to questions are automatically deleted after one day, it has been more than one day since I asked about it, so who knows if it was answered or not but still can't post pics. lol
