Tires for 17x9 wheels?

Post by WhiteHawkDown » Mon Feb 09, 2015 12:55 am

I'm looking for a great looking, wide tread path tire to put on my 17x9 97-02 Firehawk wheels. I have it narrowed down to a few in my price range(less than $150 a tire). 320 or less tread ware preferred. Candidates are 275/40/17 bfgoodrich comp-2, nitto 555, and a 265/40/17 toyo t1 sport.
Have you guys tried these? Most have done nitto's but I want more feedback on what you guys like.
I did set my suspension set up with bilsteins, big sway bars and Strano springs.
Pics and many thanks if you can help me out.

I think 265's are too narrow for 17x9 rims.. Pretty sure the optimal size is 275/40/17 and you can squeeze 285's on there

I've always had great luck with BF Goodrich although I have no experience with the Comps.

I thought that too but the design of the tread width is as wide as 275 nitto 555 and they are a 220 tread ware. I plan to use the car for fun days and a couple autocross's if I can. I would love to just get toyo r888's but it would be a waste of tire and money to get a tire that good if the car only gets 1,000 miles on it, if that in a year. The 285/40/17 are perfect wide but I did put on Strano springs and it has the possibility of rubbing and the look itself(tire height) concerns me. I was hoping you guys would have a preference in what kind of tire looks the best.
Thank you for your reply.

I'm interested in opinions on tires as well.

The 17 inch are kind of a bastard size now and although my car is my baby, given the fact it only gets 3,500 Km or so annually, I really don't want to spend $300. a tire on it.

I'll only have to discard whatever tires I get due to age rather than tread wear.

275/40/17 .. There are plenty of good tires for under $300 on tirerack.com in that size. Unless you are tracking or dragging your car there is no reason to pay $300 per tire.

eBay is having a deal right now with discount tires, $100 discount off tires purchases over $400 on select tires. I just ordered some 275/40/17 Nitto NT 05 for less than $550 shipped to my door!

I've been wanting to buy a set of new tires for my 1978 TA and was really wanting BFG's but they have a smoking deal on the Cooper Cobra Radial GT, 255/60R15. A set of four $444 minus the $100 = $86 per tire. No tax and free shipping. That is a really good deal and will be hard to pass up.

I put on a set of Firestone Firehawk Wide Oval Indy 500's 275/40/17. Very happy with these tires. They stick like crazy and were smoth as silk at 130 mph.

I just ordered a set of Firestone Firehawk Wide Oval Indy 500 275/40R17. Getting them put on next week. This is my third set of tires and they don't wear out from mileage. I have 37,000 miles and I ordered it new. I really liked the Goodyear Eagle GS-D3 or Michelin Pilot Sport PS2, but for the price I think the Firestone Firehawks will work perfectly.

I have to share on this. I was pricing tires on the internet, local tire shops, and the big tire stores. I got all my ducks in order and the best price I got was from a Firestone Complete Auto Care. At any rate I happened to be driving by local Buick Dealership and stopped in and talked with William, service writer. Well they price match, which I didn't know and they gave me the best price. I got them cheaper than Tire Rack dot com price. And that includes taxes, putting the tires on and high speed balance. Plus a couple miles from the house. Who would have thought. The only tires I have ever bought from a dealership before were attached to new cars.
