LS1 Battery Tray/Coolant Overflow Jug Poll

Post by redhawk » Thu Apr 30, 2015 7:05 pm

Just wondering how people have had problems with their cars battery tray cracking along the front lip that holds the battery down?
From what I've gathered this seems to be a common problem. I had never heard of this until it happened on my car. With only 7K miles and a garage and trailer queen its hard to believe its caused by any abuse.

The security clip bolt sheered off on mine old girl. My buddy drilled a hole, installed a bent threaded rod from underneath and made an aluminium bracket to hold the battery down. No current pictures though :(

Just replaced the busted original in my 2002 Hawk. My 2002 ws6 tray is still unbroken. Hawk has 6616 miles & the ws6 has 3528 miles.

Where did you buy a new one? Needing to replace mine as well and the only place I have found them is rockauto.com.

Cheers,

They're like $30/shipped on rockauto.
And the same thing on Ebay is also just under $30.

Have repaired 3 for myself & 4-5 for others!
Pull it, clean it, used f-26 adhesive, drill small
holes in a 'solid' section, used hex head trim
screws about 3-1/2", no more issues, BLU is
still fine.....more info if needed!

I'm sure it may depend on the crack....

I used super glue on mine. Will wait and see how it holds up before installing the new one.

I have replaced mine in the Hawk and the unmolested bird. Both were broke. Kind of important if you want to make a run down the track...In Tech Inspection they check to make sure the battery is tied down and not loose. I bought 2 new GM ones off Ebay for $55 each.....wasn't real sure about the quality of the aftermarket units. Wondering if they break because of design or if over tightened. :?: I lightly snugged mine down just enough to keep the battery from rocking, Time will tell I suppose..... :?

Mine broke this spring on my 17K mile car. If you have the rear clamp not set perfectly and tighten down too much, you will crack the forward lip. Mine was still attached and only cracked half way. I could have super-glued or expoxied it. But, while putting it back into position and measuring for a spacer off the radiator support to allow the glue to cure, it cracked clean off in the opposite direction. Sheesh.

My coolant reservoir and hose are in perfect condition. Why replace them over a stupid lip that is poorly designed? My solution? Got a piece of pine wood about 1" thick by 2-3" wide and just shorter than the length of the battery. And then wedged it in between the battery and radiator support. Used a small piece of black carpet against the radiator support to prevent scuffing the paint and it covered the wood from above so you don't see it. Everything is dark. Then anchored it down hard. It's much stronger now than it ever was with that plastic bendable forward lip. If fact it hasn't budged a hair in 2 months of driving. It never did that before. It's solid as a rock as the radiator support is now the new front lip. 0c in materials that I had already had around the house and about 10 min in labor. I'll buy a new battery tray when the old coolant reservoir starts to show signs of age or wear. A cleaner look might be a hard piece of black hard rubber. I'm not worried about it.
