2001 10th Anniversary SLP Firehawk

Post by tpc326 » Wed Jun 17, 2015 2:34 pm

We have a 2001 10th Anniversary SLP Firehawk sitting in our garage. We would like to sell the car.

2001
Production # 411......#88 10th Anniversary
Black
Hard Top
37,500 miles
I know it has the Base Alterations, 10th Anniversary, Deck Mat
South Glens Falls, NY
Price? My wife and I have no idea what the car is worth. (Guessing in the 20's) Any advice as to how to find an appraiser would be appreciated.
The car belonged to her late husband and has been sitting in the garage for a few years. (driven three time a year, inspection and just to run the engine)
I am not usually on this web site...best chance is tpc326@yahoo.com....I would be happy to email photos and copies of paperwork. (Original Birth Certificate from PQ and more)

This is the first I've heard of a hardtop 10th. You mean T-Tops?

I wouldn't waste my time or money looking for an appraiser. For one, most won't know a thing about these cars except for what they find on KBB, Edmunds, and NADA. And the number they come up with will be a heavily inflated "max retail" price that a dealer dreams they could get for the car. You can get just as good an idea of value checking on autotrader.com and LS1Tech.com as well as other collector car sites.

The 2001 FH anniv car is a very specialized "looking" car with extremely limited production (139?) but also limited demand. It never took the collectors by storm like say the 1999 WS6 anniversay car of which they made >1500, most still surviving in very nice condition and fetching mid to high $20's for ultra-low mileage coupes. Unless your anniv car is priced to sell it could take a while. $20's doesn't sound unreasonable. Performance-wise it's no different than any other FH. Note that a regular 2001 FH with 37K miles might be buyable for around $15K-$17K. It comes down to what premium to ask for the anniversary edition. There has been a mint 20K mile car available from a Florida dealer this past year in the upper $20's. They started out asking in the mid-$30's. Considering the impressive cars one can buy in the 2001-2002 WS6/Firehawks at $20K-$25K, that might be achievable. Most buyers will probably try to get you down to at most a $2K premium ($17K-$19K). Other places to advertise the car would be Ebay, Autotrader.com, and LS1Tech.com (free).

At 37K miles I think the car has a few too many miles to get interest from the top notch collectors. Cars under 15K miles and preferably under 5K miles is what they tend to look for. Good thing you're considering selling it at under 40K miles because it probably takes a decent drop in demand at >40K miles. Without spending more time looking I'd sort of think that $18K-$22K is a viable range. The manual 6 speed would be in higher demand than the automatic (worth 5-10% more). Driven 3X per year is fine. But if the car was routinely started at other times just to "run the engine" (ie not driven 5-15 miles) that could have caused problems. That's one of the worst things you can do for one of these other than letting it sit outside unprotected all year round.

Autotrader shows one car....a 1 owner, 20K mile, 6 speed at $25K asking price. So far so good. That's not as helpful as you'd think since the car was hot-rodded with a turbo. Most buyers for this model want a stock version that wasn't beat on or stressed. That turbo could be as much as a $2K to $3K deduction from a stock equivalent depending on how a potential buyer feels.

Thanks for your input, it is appreciated......I should have said I drove it on the Thruway and opened it up which I did for about a good thirty miles, as opposed to saying I just ran the engine. Your input was most helpful. Thank you.

http://slpregistry.com/car/1185.html

The car is also listed in the SLP registry. Considering all the extra finishing touches these cars came with, I don't think there are really any other "options" you could get. It is an automatic. 1 owner and/or 1 family is a big plus too....though it is normally expected that with that comes a detailed maintenance history and most of the original documents and memorabilia associated with the anniversary cars. If you want to sell it this year, get it done by August or early September at the latest. By late Sept/early October things really start to slow down in the performance car market. June and July are the strongest months. But also know that if driven sparingly between now and next year, it probably won't depreciate much at all....maybe $200-$500 at most. Interest in these cars almost falls off the cliff from Dec-March, especially in upstate New York. One plus to the upper northeast and New England is that there aren't all that many nice WS6 and Firehawks up this way. So if someone in this region is looking, it sure beats heading out 500-1,000 miles out into the middle of the country to find one.

You'll see a lot of 1998-2002 WS6 and Firehawks for sale on line. Figure as priced, 85% of them have no chance of ever selling. And it's debatable if the owner's have any intention of really selling. It's the bottom 10-15% price range of equivalent cars that actually sell within 1-3 months. So figure about 1 out of 10 cars listed is priced to sell. The others are to be ignored. Don't assume because most everyone is asking stupid numbers (especially the dealers) that they are actually worth that. On the flip side, don't necessarily believe what you see in KBB, NADA, etc. as for these cars under 50K miles, they tend to way undervalue them...a big boost for dealer trade-ins. Though I'd have to say that the NADA "classic car" guide lists pretty reasonable values for Firehawks though there is no provision for listing mileage...and they stupidly allow a box to be checked for "ram air." (they all have ram air).

Typically seen defects/problem areas seen on all WS6 and Firehawks include cracks on both upper door panels, head light - window - antennae motors that operate slowly, grinding, or not at all. Bringing fluids up to date and fresh tires could be up to a $800-$1,000 bill. Air conditioning at this age is another concern. Could be at the point where brakes are needed. These are the kinds of questions buyers will want to know. The more items left original on the car the better. The original factory air intake/lid, shifter, etc. would all be good signs the car was never modified or upgraded in any way.

Contact original post up top.
Not mine, simply sharing photos of the car up for sale.

Car looks like it has the Wings West front air dam, & the rear add-on ground-effects behind the rear tires.
(Not sure what else to call them, ...)

Yes, they are not the original stripes.
If any 10th Ann'y needs repaint, ..., you will not find the hood decals available anywhere.
So many people use another method.

I think those look pretty good. 8)

So of course, that raises the next question, ..., Which Tom may not have the complete answer to, ..., But do you suppose it's been repainted for some reason?!?
That also, & depending on if there was any damage repair, could also apply variance to the suggested sell price.

But here is what the original stripes are supposed to look like Tom.
They have a faded edge all around.
