WTB: 10th Anniv. rims

Post by mikecronis » Sun Sep 25, 2016 12:11 am

My 2002 rims on my 'Hawk in the rear are 60-pounds "out-of-round" when I got the car (#0202) and was thinking about going-gold. Wondering if anyone had a set that was in-round pretty well.
My other option would be either the gold "snowflakes" or the gold Hurst Dazzlers; the latter of which I could go 10.5 in the rears and add a wider rear tire that could match the front tire-height.

I'm very hesitant to modify/molest a 'Hawk but the rears cannot be balanced, which is a shame. The 10th Anniv. would be the least "obscene" a molestation in my opinion but those Speedlines are a bit tricky to find.

Probably be a lot cheaper to just get painted hawk wheels and re-paint/powdercoat them. I would imagine real 10th aniv wheels will cost a crap ton of money, if you can find them

Very true. I start to question myself, "What makes a Firehawk"? Well, aside from decals, a little badge, wheels, tires, and the hood.. well, that's about it. Fine line between a Trans-Am and Firehawk, really, if optioned right between the two. I get a bit hesitant not getting Speedline wheels. The Hurst ones seem pretty okay, but I start to drift away from true Firehawk territory. I have a black 2002 and the decal is white with a pink/purple flame over the letter "I". I sort of prefer a gold decal with a red flame, but that invalidates the original work from SLP. Going 10th rims or powder-coating them is fine, but I'd have to pick up used ones which might put me in the same boat of being "out-of-round" and not-balance-able.

I just wonder what makes a 'Hawk a 'Hawk. I have the portfolio from SLP as an option, and the RPO codes are all in-order of course, but I don't want to "molest" it. Original owner put the SLP Loudmoth which I had on my 1999 and I might put SLP Headers on there in the spring.

My 2002 I just got last month had been sitting for quite some time and a flush-and-fill for the fluids is in-order. Might get the SLP 160-degree thermostat as well. Had that on my long-lost 1999 (can't find it even with a VIN lookup anywhere.. crushed?)

Purists will scoff at upgrades on a collectible car, understandably. I think there's some leeway though, and sticking as close to Hurst or SLP is the way to go. Too bad SLP and Speedline aren't making wheels anymore.

Changing wheels is molestation? Lol. Guess I straight up destroyed my Hawk!

It's your hawk, do what you want with it. I personally wouldn't call gold 10th rims an upgrade since the 97,99-02 years all have the same wheel design

This.

Plus, it is REALLY easy to undo a wheel swap, just don't sell off the original parts if you want to take it back to stock

Yeah, but the rears are 60-pounds out-of-round. Pretty much egg-shaped. Not sure if anyone would want to put those back on, no?

Very true, can always get another set too though, wheels are easy, just not always cheap ;-)

Buy these, strip the chrome and paint them gold.
