Auburn Differential Upgrade
I'm thinking of upgrading to the Auburn rear differential to my car. I know it's not a great upgrade, but it's better then the original, and I'd like to stay as "stock" as possible.
My understanding is that two components are required, the Auburn posi-traction unit itself and the rear differential cover. I have no intention of changing gear ratios from the original 3:42's.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Can someone give me the part numbers of both these components?
Thanks,
Mark from the great white north!

Re: Auburn Differential Upgrade
My suggestion would be to get this and be done with it.

Much less expensive, less work and easier to swap back if you want to go back to stock.

Are you suggesting the cover or also the Eaton unit as well?

Just the cover and the stud kit.99Hawk521 wrote:This link points to cover only.Scott Chab wrote:My suggestion would be to get this and be done with it.

If the Eaton is not that great of an upgrade, why do it? You also say you want to keep it as close to stock as possible so why bother upgrading the diff?

Re: Auburn Differential Upgrade
It's a 10bolt no matter how you look at it... Put 4.10 gears in with the upgraded cover and it'll still be (in my eyes) mostly stock.. for a real upgrade, replace it with a 12 bolt, 9in,, or an S60 .. i'm with scotty

Re: Auburn Differential Upgrade
I don't think the cover is needed when changing to the Auburn unit. Plus the AAM cover does not have the stud kit, which is what improves the strength of the 10 bolt somewhat. I agree with the above though, if you want to keep it stock, just keep it stock. What are you looking to get out of the "upgrade"?

Re: Auburn Differential Upgrade
If you have no intention of doing a gear change... it is a lot of wasted effort on not any gain. In the end it is all up to you, but the TA cover Scott pointed out is the nicest of the covers out there.
As for the carriers, I prefer the worm gear Torsen unit to the clutch type Auburn personally. The Eaton clutch posi is better yet, and the True Trac is my top favorite for 10 bolts.
HOWEVER, I still say... if you do not want to do a gear change... do the cover and be done.

Re: Auburn Differential Upgrade
Which of the 10 bolt covers do I need, the 7.5" or the 8.5"?

Re: Auburn Differential Upgrade
You may already be convinced but I am bored at work so I thought id put in my $0.02
Most stock 10 bolt users prefer the worm gear torsen over the auburn for the longevity of its life. Most spirited drivers say the auburn loses its effectiveness after 30k miles. Just like a clutch(in this case friction cones) they wear out and every time you turn a corner they wear even with the additives. The torson has excellent street manners as well. My buddy still is running his torsen in his f1a procharged 660 rwhp ws6 with et streets on the rear. So is the torsen really that bad? Not in my book
Like I said, just my $0.02

I was under the impression that the Auburn was an upgrade from the Torsen until I posted this here.
I've ordered the TA Performance cover and stud kit.
Thanks for the information!
