Replacing suspension in my '94...

Post by Hawk85 » Mon Mar 04, 2013 10:33 am

I am in dire need to replace both shocks and springs in my '94 Firehawk. I have always thought that I would go with the Bilstein shocks along with the Eibach springs that SLP used (after the '94 year).

Is this set-up still the one to go with, or are there better (maybe even more cost efficient) options now? I do not know a whole lot about suspension, and who is better than who, and for what reason, so I am looking for advice - and who better to ask than a group of guys and gals that have the same love for the car that I do.

So, I guess the question is...

What suspension do you prefer, and why?

Thanks in advance to all!

If I were to go crazy I would go with QA1 shocks & springs.. For a basic replacement I would go with Bilstein shocks and Eibach or BMR springs,
- 133-24-024068: Bilstein Heavy Duty Shock, 1993-02 F-Body Front (each),$179.99
- 133-24-024075: Bilstein Heavy Duty Shock, 1993-02 F-Body Rear (each) ,$109

If you want to go with the original SLP spec'd suspension, you will need this, http://www.ebay.com/itm/Camaro-SS-Fireh ... 63&vxp=mtr (you need to do all 4 corners at the same time) you will also need to go to Eibach's or a dealer that sells Eibach suspension parts, and order a 35MM hollow front sway bar with bushings and a 21mm rear sway bar with bushings. I think Eibach sells these two sway bars in a set. You will also need these if you don't want your tires to rub, as you will be lowering your Hawk approx. 1" http://www.ebay.com/itm/Camaro-Firebird ... 35&vxp=mtr With this set up and the right tires, your car should be able to produce around .93 G or better on the skid pad. If you are not worried about keeping your Hawk as close to original as possible, check out http://www.stranoparts.com/ Sam Strano is a recognized F body suspension guru and has won several past SCCA solo titles in a F body, but expect to pay a lot more for his set up though....

BTW, if your car is a daily driver, I wouldn't use larger than a 21mm or 22mm rear sway bar though. 23mm and 25mm rear sway bars are available, but will definitely make your car more squirlly on cold or wet roads! They are better for straight line launching and not carving corners.

Here are a couple 35mm/22mm sway bar set to go with those new shocks and springs. http://www.ebay.com/itm/93-02-Camaro-Fi ... e1&vxp=mtr

Also remember that although all model year suspension parts will all interchange (93 thru 02), make sure you buy shocks and springs specifically for a 93 -97 car as the 98-02 cars had the aluminum block LS1 motor that was lighter than the iron LT1 engine. The springs will have different rates and the shocks will have different valving.
