New Firehawk owner....question about fuel smell in cabin

Post by btrottie » Wed Jul 10, 2013 11:48 am

Hi folks,

I picked up a '95 Firehawk convertible about a week ago..

Love the car but I've been getting this occasional fuel smell in the cabin.

I've had it up on a hoist and there's no obvious fuel leaks but I do get a strong smell around the rear driver's side wheelwell where the filler cap is...

any ideas? :?:

thanx in advance!

Check the Gas tank Filler Tube and associated vent tubes.

Charcoal canister? Do a Google search and you'll find some info about it.

Yep........ the rubber hoses on the fuel evaporation canister are bad about rotting......just need to replace them. :)

Under the drivers side rear wheel well......where the lines go into the fuel evaporation canister......kind of a pain to get to because they are at the top of the canister with very little room between them and the chassis.

I did the trap door mod a after the turbo build. that might make it a bit easier to get to

I'm thinking about replacing the whole setup...does anyone have the part#s for the charcoal canister and associated rubber tubes?

Same thing for the gastank filler tube..can this be replaced on it's own or is welded to the tank somehow?

The filler spout is part of the fuel tank and GM has discontinued the tank...you'll have to go after market if you think you need a tank......the fuel evap canister is still offered by GM . Check out this link http://www.newgmparts.com/shoppingcart/ ... rchtext%3D

Is the filler tube a separate piece attached to the tank? Can it be replaced without cutting off the old one? Also, do you need to drop the tank? I hear this can be a real hassle.. 8O

thanx!

Chances are that there is a tube that is disconnected, rotted away, or is getting exhaust fumes inside the car.

Trust me, taking out the tank is not an easy task. I just swapped mine out last weekend.
Have to drop the rear end, exhaust, then the tank. Have to have the car up quite a bit also.

Pull the left rear tire, inside the back of the wheelwell, there is a plastic shield that covers the canister. Remove the 8mm screw
and a plastic philips screw. Then remove the plastic shield. Look over the hoses to see if one of them are disconnected. There are 3 at the canister. Also check the condition of the rubber hose. Probably deteriorated.

Hope this helps.

thanx for the description on where to find the canister. From what I understand there are 3 hoses. If I want to replace them are they short or do some of them run the length of the car?

They are pretty short. Up to maybe 8 inches. Problem is there are 2 different sizes. Not much different, but not the same.
There will be one on to of the gas tank. Towards the front of the car, but cannot really get to it without dropping the tank.
You can feel from under the car if it is there, but not easy to do either. I will take a pic of a tank I have loose to show about where it is at.

How often are the charcoal canisters the problem? is it worth it replacing it?

Is this what it looks like for a '95 Firehawk?

That is what it looks like. Don't know if they really go bad. Don't know what kind of issue it would cause. I still have not figured out how to actually get that out. Will look into it more this weekend.
Also still working on getting that pic of where to check the hose on top of the tank.
