performance button
I understand what the button does. I assume that you would want to push the button while the car is stopped. Could you push the button without damaging anything while the car is moving and/or at cruising speed? The owners manual doesn't specify one way or the other. To me that means that it doesn't matter. But, I thought I'd run it by the experts first.

Re: performance button
you can push the button when you are driving. If memory serves me right, all it is is the traction control. also known as " the fun button "

Re: performance button
The performance button was transmission not traction control related if I remember right. As far as I know, you can press it any time.

"I own '94 firehawk #265, it also has this button. It's not a turbo, blower, nitrous, plasma, warp drive enable button. It merely changes the shifting characteristics of the automatic transmission. It forces the transmission to upshift at a higher RPM. Also, the shifting itself will be done a little quicker/harder than normal. For instance, without the performance button selected, I can bark the tires when shifting from first to second, but not between any other gears. With it selected, I'm able to bark the tires between first and second and between second and third. Hope this answers your question."

"Your transmission is computer controled and the performance button shortens the electronic pulse to the pressure control motor or "force motor" in the valvebody. This raises the line pressure of the transmission and should give you a firmer shift. I wouldn't reccomend using it all the time as this will cause premature wear on your bands and clutch discs inside the trans. If you don't notice a difference, you may have a bad force motor in your valvebody. Very easy to replace it and costs around $50.00. GM Powertrain updated the force motor in '97 and retrofits all past units. Old number prefix "865" ; New number prefix "242". I hope I cleared this up a little bit for ya. (Also, make sure the button lights up. You have to have power to force motor for it to work)."
Based on these posts I'm led to believe that it's more than traction control. That's why I asked if it could be turned on with the car moving. Nothing in these posts or the manual actually specifies that. I've used it from a dead stop and notice the difference in shifting. I'm wondering if you're cruising in town and someone pulls up beside you and rev wants to 'play' can I push the button while moving and have some fun without damaging anything.
Maybe I'm putting to much thought into this. Perhaps I'll just push it and see what happens.

To be fair, I should have been more specific. I'm new to these cars and forget that probably 95% are 6 speeds.

^Yes... good thing... that as a spam bot, you can copy and post text from black-hawk's previous post.
Re: performance button
Not quite 95%. It's actually about 70-30 for 2002's. I'm not familiar with the LT-1's though. Probably not much different.Nighthawk wrote:To be fair, I should have been more specific. I'm new to these cars and forget that probably 95% are 6 speeds.
