My 2001 Firehawk has issues with the oil pressure

Post by Maddripp » Mon Nov 25, 2013 6:05 pm

My oil pressure gage fluctuates.... It when I step on the gas.... If I step on it all the way I'm pretty sure it will max out and do damage.... The highest it's gone is 70 psi almost 75... I'm pretty sure it's not normal.... Can anyone help me out.... Oh yeah I forgot to mention it has a Vortec Supercharger

not sure you have a problem at all... how low does the oil pressure go at idle? Has anyone done any internal mods to the engine? As in changing out the oil pump?

as long as the oil pressure does not go too low... you should be ok from the sounds of it. The old school rule of thumb is you should have 10psi for every 1k rpm. So yes, as your rpms increase, your oil pressure should too. I know on my built setup, idle is in the 30 to 40 psi range and goes to about as high as 80 or so from about 4k to 7k rpm.

Wait I was wrong it idles at about 50-55 psi.... When it's cold.... Then when the care warms up it idles at 40 psi

So going all the way to 80 doesn't mess up the car?

The SC must be fed lubrication oil from the engine, so the cause of your unusual OP behavior may be related to whatever was done to plumb in that oil supply and/or the oil return. Can you find a set of instructions for that work?

I did a little searching on the net and it does sound like 80 psi could start causing some issues - filter gasket blowout, rear main leaking, stress on the oil pump shaft, etc.

It sounds like you need to learn some more about what was done to the engine - for example, was ther a higher pressure pump installed.

Also I'm assuming that you don't know what oil is in the car? I saw a couple of articles where putting a higher viscosity oil in an engine caused higher oil pressure, especially in cold weather.

Maybe you should start by changing your oil and see what that does.

Here is a pretty informative site http://www.bobistheoilguy.com

I have no actual info on what exactly what was done to the car or why it's doing what it's doing
