I have Pinned the speedo in my hawk, and then the next day backed it up by hitting 145 MPH. Felt like it was nothing, nice and smooth!

I have hit 150 mph in my WS6 and in my Hawk. (what a weekend) :D From the factory these cars do have a speed limiter in them and according to a person at GM engineering it is set at 163MPH from the factory. That is for the 98-02 models with the Z-rated tires.

Saw an article where they tested a T/A and a camaro. The T/A pulled right up and hit the speed limiter however the Camaro would not pull over 160mph they guessed it might be the cooler air the T/A got due to the way the airbox is set up between the two. However, I am sure there are some that will and some that won't of both cars. Just due to build tolerances

Thought I'd chime in and say the fastest I've put mine up to is 100mph. Yea I know pretty lame, for having a car that's over 2 years old with only 4,900 miles on her. Guess I'll have to get it up there next year when she comes out...LOL

I've never even driven my new Firehawk, let alone taken it up to top speed, but before I was deployed to Iraq I was stationed in Germany with my 98 Camaro SS. I definitely made a few top speed runs on the autobahn. I had just about every bolt-on mod that you can do to an LS1 and had no problem pegging the speedo at what I'm guessing was about 165-168 in 5th gear. 6th gear was much too tall a gear for top speed - if I shifted into 6th gear at any speed beyond 135 mph the car would slow down to about 128-130 even with the gas pedal on the floor.

On a side note one of my buddies with an 01 Firehawk (his car was one of the main reasons I sold my SS before getting deployed) pushing over 600 h.p. had his picture taken by the speed cameras that the German police have on the autobahns at what was converted to be 198 mph. It was on a stretch of autobahn without speed limits so he didnt get in trouble - but the cameras supposedly take pictures of anyone going over 300kph and the authorities follow up to make sure the vehicle traveling that fast has the appropriate safety gear - properly rated tires, etc.

I have only had my Firehawk up to about 120mph. The roads here in Indiana just aren't open like they were in California. I used to own a 94 Trans Am in California and I lived about 10 miles off the main road in a little town called California City. I buried that 155mph speedometer more times than I can count on both hands. Nothin but you and an occassional coyote for miles on a nice newly paved road in the middle of the desert. What a rush!! :D

I have driven 02 787 to the factory speed limiter (160 mph). This was done two years ago, on california state highway 43 at 1:00pm there was no traffic and it took me two miles to get it up there. Yeah at that speed it is scary because you only need to move the steering wheel about an eight of an ich to shooting across the lane. However the areo dynamic shape of the car creates amazing down force and keeps the tires planted. If you want to know how fast your car can go an do it safely, I suggest you compete in a sanctioned road race event like the silver state classic or the nevada open road challenge. happy motoring yall

Haven't done it for a long time but I've had my '96 Convert pegged a couple of times so I guess right around 155 or maybe a little more. That was with the top down. I've gone almost as fast with the top up (maybe 145) and it sounded kind of terrible. Like the top was gonna lift off or something.

My Camaro on the other hand has been clocked on radar at 219 mph. That was before I owned it but was a friend of mine. Wasn't a cop that clocked him, he had his own radar gun that was setup on a tripod. Pretty crazy...

Top speed of 160 in about 45 seconds? Dayum, not too shabby. I really wasn't thinking in terms of miles and seconds while up there, just traffic, road, cops, brakes. I'd check how many mile markers had elapsed when I dropped back down in speed.
Check the other thread about new tires for info on getting the tires properly mounted & balanced.
