Traction problems

I just tried my new Nitto Drag Radials at the track and had a ruff time of it. My first two runs were good with a 2.03 and a 2.08 60ft time. However, after that, I was in the 2.40 and 2.50 range the rest of the day. I was also losing 1 second from from 330ft times.

I had never used drag radials before so I did not really do a burn out. I did try a couple of times between wet and dry, but because of inexperiance never really got them smoking.

My question is: Are these just bad tires, or, did they not work right because I did a poor job of cleaning them off and getting them heated up? After each run, I could see there was a lot of pebbles and crap stuck to them. Also, if I did not prepare them right, how should I do the burn out, wet or dry? Please help because I was very upset to go from a 13.19 my first run to a 14.3-14.4 the rest of the day.

Again, it had to be traction because of losing 1 second in the 330ft from my first run to the rest.

Any help is appreciated

You hsouldn't have to do a big smokey burnout with drag radials... justy do enough to clean them off and get them warm. Also, I would suggest staying out of the water box.

What pressure were you running in them?

no they are not bad tires. i run nittos and they work good. what mods do you have? what size are the nittos? i run about 14.50 stock at 95 mph. my car could never do a 13. it's hard to explaine, but a slipping hot transmission can cause lost time. how does you trans shift?......RON

I was running the tires at about 25-26 lbs.

The mods I have done are 4.10 gears with a hypertech program, Air Lid, and headers, hi-flow cats, y-pipe, loud mouth exhaust.

The trans shifts very firm because of the hypertech, but it does not shift until about 60, at which point I am past the 330 ft.

The Nittos are 275 40 17's

Try experimenting with less air... I've seen guys drop rear tire pressure into the low 20s.

Exactly, try running at 20 - 22# psi, and I have seen some run them as low as 18", but I personally DON'T

Would you all agree that not cleaning the tires off properly with a good burn out would be a reason to lose a second on my time?

try lower air pressure and do a dry burnout. just stand on the brake until the rears start turning in low gear then let off the brake and do power burn right up to the line and stage the car. if you sit there smoking youll just glaze the tires and it won't much. i do that with mine and don't have any trouble with traction. i run the 315x 17 in nittos and have 50 lbs in the trunk.....................RON
