1969 Firebird Stolen

Post by davidds91 » Mon Oct 22, 2012 1:28 am

In 1987, I purchased my dream car, a 1969 Pontiac Firebird. It had a blown LT1 Corvette Motor in it and it had just been recovered by the legal owner from having been stolen from Vallejo, California and was found in Oakley, California around February, 1987. I bought it for $962.50. I installed a rebuilt Pontiac 400 engine with a Holley 650 Double Pumper and a Ram Air hood, with a Turbo 400 transmission with a B&M mega Shifter. It had a 3:73 true posi rear end, traction bars, Corvette Ralley rims with Dunlap GT radials, a rear power antenna with a Kenwood stereo with an Alpine booster/amp and Pioneer speakers. It also had a Mallory tach on the steering colum. The heater was disconnected but other than that, it ran perfect and well, lets just say I got my share of speeding tickets (and girls) in it! The Lic plate # was XKW 963, and the VIN was 223379L106882. It was stolen again in 1988 after I ran out of gas one day on the way to work. I had to leave it on the side of HWY 37 in Vallejo, California right next to the then Marine World now Six Flags. It was fire engine red with some oxidation. That car was my life and if anyone has any information about it I would really appreciate hearing from you. Even after 20 years, I still miss that car, more than any former girl friend.

Chances are it is gone forever.

Ha!... 20 years is nothing!... many stories out there of recoveries of cars stolen longer back!

Unless it was parted-out or totaled-out, I'd predict it's wearing a different color paint and the current owner has no idea of its true story.

Best wishes that you find your car someday David. Hopefully good karma will smile upon you at some point and there'll be a break-through for you... though I always feel sorry for the current owners who discover the cars are stolen and are now totally out the money they paid for it. I also always wonder if the authorities ever track back to try and figure out who the original crook(s) was/were.

Can think of a number of things that oughta be done with them! Ya just don't mess with another man's car!

If you look at the number of cars recovered after being stolen 20+ years ago, I'm willing to bet that "many" is actually a fraction of a percent.

Can anyone give me some advice on the best way to approach this issue? I recently saw what could likely be my stolen 1969 Firebird but how do I go about investigating the car without pissing off the current owner? I mean, as long as it has been, it is quite likely the person who currently owns does not know it is stolen and if it turns out to be mine, I'm sure they are not going to want to give it up or even let me inspect it close up to see if it is or not.

I would think your best approach would be to talk to an attorney. Do you still have any proof that you once owned the car? Insurance, shop bills, registrations, pictures. Anything, no matter how insignificant you may think it is, could be valuable in the recovery. The attorney will build his/your case, then contact the police. Best to follow legal paths. Best wishes on recovering your old ride.

An attorney? Hadn't thought of that! Thank you!
