No Torsen?

Post by mikecronis » Fri Jun 24, 2016 9:30 am

If a 2002 doesn't have the Torsen listed in the SLP Options list, is that the default one? Note* Auburn is also not listed.

If unlisted on the SLP sheet, is Torsen the rear-differential installed, or is it another type?

If Torsen or Auburn is not listed on the SLP sheet, then it is the stock GM rear end.

The stock rear-end? Was that one they put in the back of the WS6?
Great... just great. This one I'm getting has the G80 (Grenade-80) self-destructing rear-diff. How much to throw that out for a Torsen?

I believe so, I don't think GM had a option for changing that in the WS6.

LS1 forum suggests all V8 Trans-Ams with the T56 had the Torsen, but the RPO code G80 suggests a different rear-diff 3.42 setting. I think it might be Eaton Posi-Traction?

According to several sources, including Mac Logan's Firehawk book, all 99-02 v8 f-bodies came from gm with torsen diffs! Even wikipedia says 99-02 had torsen under the heading of "Applications"

Also, I forgot to mention in my last post that any gm product with a limited slip of any kind has an RPO code of g80, even the lockers on trucks, which causes a lot of confusion among owners.

You're RIGHT! The G80 could be the "locker" locking-diff, or even gen3 F-body LSD or heck, various posi-traction or locking-diff codes.. Quite the misunderstood GM RPO indeed! Yes, again, you're RIGHT about the Torsen. After 1999 it seems GM put 'em in Trans-Ams regardless.

My 1999 Firehawk SLP secondary sheet boasts the Torsen but my soon-to-arrive 2002 does not, though it should have it as-standard.

THANKS!!!

Glad I could help. It's strange that your 99 listed the torsen on the SLP second sticker, since they started using the auburn hd that year!

If it doesn't have it as an option it is the standard Eaton unit. Both the Torsen and Auburn were optional upgrades.

I don't know, every source I've looked at says that gm made the torsen standard equipment starting in 99 through the end of production in 02 for all v8 f-bodies, and that was why SLP started offering the auburn hd with the aam cover as their optional rear end.

Is there any way I can check? SLP never answers my questions anymore.

Everything I've read about torsen says it acts like an open diff when jacked up in the air, so spin one wheel, and if the other turns opposite direction it has the torsen.
