need help for a 91 Firehawk #005

Post by firehawk 005 » Mon Oct 23, 2017 1:19 pm

Hi, my name is Siggi, I'am from Germany and this is my first post. Sorry also about my bad English
but I hope you will understand me. Since 2001 I maintenance and repair a 91 Firehawk #005 for a friend. The car has now 45000 Miles and runs pretty good but we have a problem with the clutch. The first orig. one works 42000 Miles, after that we change them 2001 with a new aftermarket one. This new one works only 2500 Miles to the year 2014. So in 2014 I build a secound one from Rock Auto in. I take the expensive one complete with flyingwheel and folk and extra 50 HP. But after 800 Miles normal drive he began also to slip.
Can anybody tell me what kind of clutch I must use to get more milage on the odometer ?? I throw the orig Clutch away so I have no orig numbers to find myself the right one.
For all tips I'am grateful and I hope a firehawk specialist can help me.

Thanks in advance Siggi

Are you adjusting the clutch when you install it or just bolting it in? This sounds more like improper installation issues than clutch issues. Do you have pictures of the any of the clutches and flywheels you took off so we can see what they looked like? Also breaking a clutch in properly is huge for longevity. If it isn't done right the clutch surfaces can be damaged in a very short time.

Hi Nick
Thanks for your fast answer, but I don't think I make a mistake by the clutch. I look for the old parts, but they are gone and pictures I can make when I put out the trans. ones more ( may be in the next 2-3 weeks).
My suspicion is that the aftermarkt clutch kits are not strong enough for the 1991 Firehawk. The Corvette LT 1 has a 11“ Clutch plate and the Pontiac only 10,5“ with more power.
All aftermarket kits I orders was for a 91Firebird 5.7L and this may be not good enough. The Driver
from the 91 Firehawk told me his orig. clutch was much stronger my press the clutch pedal, so this girlfriend can't press the pedal. By the 2 aftermarketkits it was much easierer and she could press the pedal without any problem.
For the logic must a car with more power than a LT1 Corvette and also a smaller Clutchplate (10,5“) have a stronger pressure plate or better material.
So may be the 1991/1992 Firehawk use another orig. clutchkit then normal 5.7L Firebirds.
Does anybody knows about that ?

Part of the problem may be the clutch that you are trying to replace it with.
91 Firebirds typically had T5 Transmissions in them. The 91/92 Firehawk had the ZF 6 speed.
Might have to get a Corvette clutch from the a year that had the ZF. If we could see a pic of the clutch and flywheel, it might give us something to go off of. I am assuming that the original flywheel is long gone also.

Hi tazman71
I also think so that I have build for 2 times the wrong clutchset in. I do the first chang in 2001, but I can't remember the size og the orig.clutch, but I know it was a 10.5“ clutch plate. This unit was good for appoximately 3500 Miles and then the clutch began to slip through.
2014 I ordered from Rockauto for a 1991 Firebird 5.7L the Clutchkit AMS 040195R100 and the flywheel GM 14088646 (you can see good pichtures on the Rock Auto site). All items has the same dimensions than the old one and fits well. The only difference was the foot pressure onthe pedal
First orig.Clutch, Pedal pressure was very hard/ Secound clutch 2001 Pedal pressure was softer and by the last clutch the pedal pressure was a little bit more softer. Now after 1000 miles the clutch is slipping again . I don't have open the clutch yet, but when I have time in the next 2-3 week , I will do it and send some pictures.
Tazman71, I'am not sure that a 11“ cluchplate from a corvette fits in an 91 Firehawk, may be the Bell housing is too small. The best way to find this out,is to find a 91/92 hawk owner who do also a clutchkit change and has the experience or knows exactly what kind of clutchkit (HP or standart) was orig. installed in this cars from SLP.
By my investigations I find out that most 91/92 Firehawk in USA has low mileages and I'am not sure if anybody has done a clutch change before.
